Parenting Styles

Your parenting style affects your child's emotional and social development. Researchers in psychology have identified 4 parenting styles. 

1. Authoritarian parenting

2. Authoritative parenting

3. Permissive parenting 

4. Uninvolved/Neglectful parenting

Authoritarian parents 

  • You believe kids should be seen and not heard.
  • When it comes to rules, you believe it's "my way or the highway."
  • You don't take your child's feelings into consideration.

Authoritative Parenting

  • You put a lot of effort into creating and maintaining a positive relationship with your child.
  • You explain the reasons behind your rules.
  • You set limits, enforce rules, and give consequences in a healthy manner.

Permissive Parenting

  • You set rules but rarely enforce them.
  • You don't give out consequences very often.
  • You think your child will learn best with little interference from you.

Uninvolved Parenting

  • You don't ask your child about school or homework.
  • You rarely know where your child is or who they are with.
  • You don't spend much time with your child.


Effects of Different Parenting Styles

Authoritarian Parenting

Child will demonstrate

  • Anger issues
  • Poor self-esteem
  • Indecisive thinking
  • Poor social skills

Authoritative Parenting

Child will demonstrate

  • Healthy confidence
  • Ability to regulate emotions
  • Higher self-esteem
  • Better social skills

Permissive Parenting

Child will demonstrate

  • Impulsivity
  • Selfishness
  • Lack of self-regulation
  • Increase in negative habits

Uninvolved Parenting

Child will demonstrate

  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Poor coping strategies
  • Difficulty in relationships
  • Academic difficulties

Signs of a Covert Narcissist

1. They crave external validation.
2. They either idealize people or demonize them.
3. They are quick to taunt or mock others to feel superior.
4. They are easily offended when others treat them the way they treat others.
5. They harm others and play the victim. They create false stories to portray themselves as victims.
6. They are manipulative. They do not respect physical or psychological boundaries. 
7. They are low on emotional intelligence. 
8. They are envious and quick to defame people whom they see as competition or a threat.
9. Their conversations are mostly superficial either centered around their own imaginary achievements or the imaginary failures of others.
10. They lack empathy but can feign sympathy.
